Who's in a contract year?
2006 NFL Free Agents
Quarterback
Player '06 Analysis
Drew Brees, SD UFA Playing under the one-year franchise tag, Brees needs another strong season to secure a big payday. That payday probably won't happen in San Diego.
Ken Dorsey, SF RFA Looks like a career backup.
Jeff Garcia, DET UFA Must prove his worth right away.
Jon Kitna, CIN UFA Could challenge a young QB elsewhere.
Kurt Warner, AZ UFA One-year audition to keep Cardinals job and prove that he is still "starter".
Running Back
Player '06 Analysis
Shaun Alexander, SEA UFA Seahawks could afford to keep franchising him. Seattle doesn't seem interested in long-term deal.
Michael Bennett, MN UFA Will be ultra-motivated to stay healthy for once. His future, probably, is not in Minnesota.
Shawn Bryson, DET UFA A useful third-down back
Jesse Chatman, SD UFA Contract status could work against him. Chargers may look to groom young backup.
Najeh Davenport, GB UFA A 50/50 chance he's a future starter, possibly in Green Bay. Needs to stay healthy.
Domanick Davis, HOU RFA Very interesting to see if he's in Houston's long-term plans. Vernand Morency could replace him.
Deshaun Foster, CAR UFA Will be motivated to prove he's reliable. Big year.
Ahman Green, GB UFA Should have enough left in tank for one more big season. Packers may not want to pay him, especially after off-the-field problems.
Quentin Griffin, DEN RFA Unlikely to attract interest on RFA market
Travis Henry, BUF UFA Possibly will sign new deal with new team for '05.
Edgerrin James, IND UFA Colts are unlikely to offer James a long-term deal. They are also unlikely to use franchise tag again. A player admittedly obsessed with cash, James needs another big year.
Jamal Lewis, BAL UFA Only 25, Lewis would be very interesting on open market. Ravens want to resign before season.
Deuce McAllister, NO UFA An offensive cornerstone. The Saints are working hard on long-term deal. We would not mind seeing him play for it.
Maurice Morris, SEA UFA Seahawks could lose top two backs. Not starter material.
Onterrio Smith, MIN RFA "The Whizzinator" isn't going to pay for itself. He's suspended for the season.
Chester Taylor, BAL UFA Cleveland was ready to pay him starter money this offseason.
Anthony Thomas, DAL UFA A-Train's career is already year to year.
Moe Williams, MIN UFA Nearing end of line.
Wide Receiver
Player '06 Analysis
Arnaz Battle, SF RFA Could be starting receiver this season.
Antonio Bryant, CLE UFA Career year would surprise no one, if he starts.
Nate Burleson, MIN RFA Vikings should look to lock up Burleson long term after this season.
Reche Caldwell, SD UFA Big mystery. Needs to stay healthy to prove worth.
Jabar Gaffney, HOU UFA Useful role player, especially on third downs.
Rod Gardner, WAS UFA League wasn't interested in trade. Production could fall off cliff.
David Givens, NE UFA Will earn big cash if he keeps momentum going. Unlikely to stay in NE.
Brandon Lloyd, SF RFA Time for Lloyd to get serious.
Hines Ward, PIT UFA Likely to earn new contract before season. Ward plays hard, regardless.
Reggie Wayne, IND UFA Best wideout available. Can Colts keep paying big for offense?
Tight End
Player '06 Analysis
Randy McMichael, MIA UFA Does the new coaching staff want him? Would be the best FA tight end in years. Franchise tag a possibility.
Todd Heap, BAL UFA Ravens want to complete long-term deal and should be able to.
Freddie Jones, CAR UFA Needs a different offense to matter.
